Managed backend you can't self-host, now Wix-owned
There's no self-hosting of the platform or backend. Base44 manages the database, authentication, and deployment itself, and since Wix acquired it in 2025 that infrastructure sits inside Wix's ecosystem. Combine that with the 2025 Wiz auth-bypass disclosure and Wix's acquisition, and the ownership story is closer to Bubble's than to a tool like Lovable or Replit that hands you a working, self-hostable codebase. Know which you're actually getting before you pick on "you get the code."

Base44 and Bubble both keep the parts of your app that matter — the backend, the data, the running system. Base44's front-end export is a real but partial escape; Bubble offers none. When the product is past validation and needs to be a maintainable, secure, owned asset, the honest move is a rebuild in code you fully control: a backend you host, a database you can see into, and code that's been reviewed rather than generated and shipped. That's the version that survives an acquisition, a price change, or a security review.
